Coming up with novel ideas is a natural talent of yours.🪄

But how do you know which idea will carry your interest throughout the entire writing process, in addition to carrying the interest of your readers past the first few pages?

Here are the questions I ask before committing to a novel idea 💍:

Right off the bat, do I subconsciously defend my idea?

a) I know that no matter the quiz results, I will continue developing what I have.

b) I like what I have so far, but can’t shake the feeling that something is missing.

c) The idea of exploring and combining new ideas excites me more than what I already have.

Does my story idea have a compelling conflict or challenge?

a) Yes, there's a clear conflict that drives the plot and will 💯% interest the readers.

b) There's a conflict, but it needs more development.

c) I don’t have a central conflict yet.

How well can I describe my main characters?

a) I know their MBTI personalities, fears and motivations.

b) I have some ideas but I need to flesh them out a little.

c) I'm finding it challenging to create compelling characters.

Have I considered the setting or world-building for my story?

a) I have a well-constructed setting and I can vividly imagine being there.

b) I have awesome ideas for the setting, but I need to piece together a few things.

c) I haven't thought much about the setting, my focus has been on another aspect.

Have I identified potential plot twists or surprises?

a) Yes, I have several intriguing plot twists in mind.

b) I've thought of a few potential surprises, but they need fine tuning 🔧.

c) I haven't explored plot twists yet.

Is it a story I would want to read?

a) Absolutely, it’s got everything I love and more.

b) I’m unsure that I would.

c) It is not. But I know someone that would.

The Results:

Mostly A's:

Your idea has strong potential and is already well-developed in many aspects.

With careful execution, it could easily turn into a compelling narrative - but you already knew that! Happy writing!

Mostly B's:

Don't second guess, your story may only need more of the things you love.

If you’ve been able to outline most of it, that’s already a good indicator of great potential. Consider addressing areas where you have doubts or gaps and you’ll be well on your way to write a riveting novel.

Mostly C's:

Your story idea is in the early stages and you can easily be swayed towards new shinny ideas.

Spend more time brainstorming, planning, and seeking inspiration. If you don't feel energized about it after further development, save it for later and begin developing a new idea. Ask yourself the same questions if you're still unsure about your outline.

Every idea can be turned into a great commercial one. What will hold the reader's interest throughout are the premise and core conflict.

Bottom line is : no opinion matters but yours.

You know what to do 😉.

Love,

Jess
